Does Property Insurance Cover Living Expenses?
Some forms of property damage can lead your home to be unlivable while it is being repaired, requiring you to move out until the restoration is complete. If your home has been severely damaged, you may be wondering whether your property insurance will cover your living expenses while your home is undergoing repairs and restoration.
Most insurance policies provide for “additional living expenses.” Additional living expenses traditionally cover living expenses while your home is being repaired, including the cost of housing and other necessary expenses. However, every insurance policy is different, and the maximum coverage for additional living expenses can vary greatly from policy to policy.
It may be a good idea to review your insurance policy to determine your additional living expense coverage. If you do find yourself in a situation where your home is severely damaged, requiring you to move out until it is repaired, it is important to keep documentation of all expenses to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
If you have filed a claim for additional living expenses and your insurance company is denying, partially denying, or underpaying the additional living expense claim, or the underlying property insurance claim, it may be time to contact an attorney. Call our office today for a consultation.
