Does My Property Insurance Cover Mold Removal?
Mold can grow extremely quickly in the Florida heat and humidity, even indoors. It can also be extremely dangerous to your health and result in property damage. If you discover mold inside your home, you may be wondering if your standard homeowner’s insurance policy covers it.
Typically, most insurance policies only cover damages caused by “covered perils,” which are those events and accidents that occur which the insurance company has agreed to cover. Covered perils are usually things like water damage caused by a broken pipe or a windstorm causing your roof to leak, resulting in interior water damage.
Mold presents a unique problem for homeowners because it may not be obvious immediately and may appear long after the claim has been handled, although it has been caused by the initial claim. Additionally, mold caused by flooding may not be covered by a standard homeowner’s insurance policy and require a separate flood policy.
