Cast Iron Pipes: Should They Be Replaced?
One of the most common causes of property damage is water damage, which can be caused by pipe failures. Cast iron was one of the most common plumbing systems for homes built prior to 1975 and unfortunately may deteriorate over time. Before your plumbing system causes damage to your home, here are some tips for recognizing when it may be time to replace cast iron systems.
Discolored Water
One of the most obvious signs of a failing cast iron plumbing system is discolored water coming from your tap. Discolored water is a sign of rust, which may indicate that your cast iron plumbing system is beginning to fail.
Presence of Water Damage
If you notice water damage to your walls, floors, or other areas of your home, or puddles outside of your home, it may be a sign that your cast iron plumbing system is beginning to fail, causing leaks throughout your home.
Cracking or Sinking Foundation
Leaking cast iron plumbing that is beginning to fail may cause your foundation to crack or sink. If you notice your foundation is beginning to crack or sink, it may be a sign that your cast iron plumbing system is failing.
